Making Water COOL in School

Due to budget constraints, many schools do not have adequate funding to replace old, outdated fountains. Many of these fountains contain risks to student health. Tap Water Watch partners with schools to provide free filtered water bottle fillers to ensure clean drinking water for students and staff.

Hydration

Simply put, kids are happier and healthier when they are hydrated. However, 54% of students test below the minimum daily water intake. Studies consistently show that keeping kids hydrated results in better behavior and performance in school.

Lead

Tap Water Watch testing data (>11,000 schools) shows elevated levels of lead in 56% of schools tested.

Germs

Younger students oftentimes put their mouths on drinking fountains, which transfers germs and results in missed days of school.

Missed Class Time

When a student needs to leave the classroom to get a drink from a fountain, he/she can be a disturbance to the class and miss valuable class time.

Easy Refill

Older, traditional fountains do not allow students to easily refill bottles.

Sugary Drinks

Almost two-thirds of children in the US consume at least one sugary drink on any given day – and roughly 30% consume two or more per day resulting in weight gain, type 2 diabetes, cavities and high cholesterol.

Plastic

Approximately 60 million plastic water bottles are used every day in the US, with over 18 billion ending up in a landfill each year. Each bottle can take up to 700 years to decompose.

Save Money

Purchasing bottles of water is expensive for both students and staff.

St. Amant High School was very fortunate to be a recipient of these bottle filling stations. It allows us to promote a healthy lifestyle and recycling efforts that better supports our environment. We can encourage hydration and waste reduction to our students. In the time since we have installed these stations, we have saved thousands of plastic bottles from being used, that is displayed on the machine so it is a daily reminder of the benefits of our hydration stations. Principal, St. Amant High School

We have loved having the water bottle filling stations at Lincoln Charter School. The day that they were installed, the students were very excited to get to reduce our use of plastic bottles and start refilling their own. We have seen a huge decrease in the use of single use plastic bottles already and see the majority of our students bringing their own reusable water bottles that they refill each day. Thank you for these!! Jessica Kelly

High School Administrator, Lincoln Charter School

The installation of our new water bottle filling stations has given our students the ability to refill reusable water bottles. Each student who chooses to refill their water bottle rather than using single-use plastic bottled water is helping to protect our environment. The initiative is also raising awareness to our students about sustainability and how even the smallest decisions or choices impact the future of our world. Sister Patricia Roche, FMA
